{"id":1038,"date":"2021-08-31T09:03:06","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T14:03:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/betterpathology.com\/?p=1038"},"modified":"2022-09-17T15:55:06","modified_gmt":"2022-09-17T20:55:06","slug":"leaky-vaccines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/betterpathology.com\/?p=1038","title":{"rendered":"Leaky Vaccines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">A perfect vaccine protects like a child\u2019s immunity after chicken pox.&nbsp;&nbsp;It prevents future disease, prevents transmissions to others, and lasts for a very long time.&nbsp;&nbsp;Anything less is called a leaky vaccine.&nbsp;&nbsp;Let\u2019s see how our current COVID vaccines stand up to each of these points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Prevent Future Disease<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;COVID vaccines don\u2019t connect on this standard, and there are any number of reports that can show this.&nbsp;&nbsp;Just to pick one we haven\u2019t discussed before, read the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/wr\/pdfs\/mm7034e4-H.pdf\">MMWR Early Release for August 24, 2021<\/a> which shows vaccine effectiveness dropped from 91% to 66% since the arrival of the delta variant, suggesting that vaccine is less protective against delta than pre-delta strains.&nbsp;&nbsp;But this data also shows that vaccine protection from disease was less than perfect even before delta.&nbsp;&nbsp;A perfect vaccine has effectiveness of 100%; our COVID vaccines never have.<\/li><li><strong>Prevent Transmission of Virus to Others<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Another swing and a miss.&nbsp;&nbsp;To drive this point home, we need go no further than the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html\">CDC\u2019s Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated Individuals<\/a>, which states, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/science\/science-briefs\/fully-vaccinated-people.html\">Preliminary evidence<\/a> suggests that fully vaccinated people who do become infected with the Delta variant can be infectious and can spread the virus to others.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;Still not convinced?&nbsp;&nbsp;A recent pre-print&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3897733\">study<\/a>&nbsp;from Vietnam demonstrates transmission between vaccinated healthcare workers.&nbsp;&nbsp;A perfect vaccine would prevent infection between vaccinated individuals; our COVID vaccines do not.<\/li><li><strong>Lasts for a Long Time<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Strike three.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even though the vaccines have been available for less than a year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2021.07.29.21261317v1.full.pdf\">emerging data<\/a>&nbsp;from Israel suggests that their effectiveness is already waning.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/betterpathology.com\/?p=934\">My own antibodies<\/a>&nbsp;lasted for less than five months.&nbsp;&nbsp;Vaccine-induced immunity doesn\u2019t last very long.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our COVID vaccines are leaky.&nbsp;&nbsp;So what?&nbsp;&nbsp;Just take a booster.&nbsp;&nbsp;And another.&nbsp;&nbsp;And another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several problems with this reasoning.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here are three:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, a false perception of protection leads to risky behavior.&nbsp;&nbsp;Maybe you\u2019re young, and it doesn\u2019t matter if you get a SARS-CoV-2 infection.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Maybe you\u2019re pregnant or elderly, and it does.&nbsp;&nbsp;When you believe that your vaccination protects you from future infection, you are more likely to ignore precautions that might protect your life, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0405094\">the lives of others<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, leaky vaccines may stimulate the formation of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosbiology\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pbio.1002198\">more dangerous variants<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0The theory goes like this.\u00a0\u00a0The virus seeks a host.\u00a0\u00a0If vaccination reduces but doesn\u2019t eliminate the available hosts, the virus feels evolutionary pressure to mutate into a form that will infect more people.\u00a0\u00a0Not everyone agrees with this idea, but there is enough evidence to at least consider this possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, leaky vaccines will not eradicate SARS-CoV-2, no matter how many boosters you take.&nbsp;&nbsp;Vaccination has eradicated exactly one human viral pathogen from the earth: smallpox.&nbsp;&nbsp;The smallpox vaccine was a perfect example of a perfect vaccine.&nbsp;&nbsp;It prevented disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;It prevented transmission.&nbsp;&nbsp;It lasted a lifetime. It eradicated the virus from the earth.&nbsp;&nbsp;And it took&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/smallpox\/history\/history.html\">nearly 200 years<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;We cannot expect a leaky vaccine to produce the same results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe future vaccines won\u2019t be as leaky as the ones we have now.&nbsp;&nbsp;Maybe we\u2019ll even have a perfect COVID vaccine someday.&nbsp;&nbsp;We can hope.&nbsp;&nbsp;But until then, eradication is a pipedream.&nbsp;&nbsp;Instead, we must do all we can to protect the lives, the health, and the wellbeing of people while the virus is among us.&nbsp;&nbsp;We must learn to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/betterpathology.com\/?p=803\">live<\/a>&nbsp;with the
